Wentworth Athletics

The Coaches:

Basketball - Tom Hughes:  Hughes has coached successfully on the professional (USBL/IBA), collegiate (back-to-back NSCAA National Champions) and high school levels.  Hughes returns to lead the program at Wentworth, a position he held from 1985-94. Hughes is the most successful coach in the programs history.

Soccer - Kevin Farley: Kevin Farley comes to Wentworth from Iowa Lakes Community College (Spencer, IA).  Farley started both the Men's and Women's Soccer program at Iowa Lakes.  Farley has coached on the college level, including stops at Si Tanka University and Dakota Wesleyan.

Volleyball - Lindsey Mesner:  A native of Rockwell, Iowa, Mesner comes to Wentworth Military College with coaching experience at the high school, club volleyball and collegiate levels.

Wentworth Military Academy and College is committed to excellence in athletics as part of a larger commitment to excellence and education. We believe that physical activity is a valuable component of successful human development.  Intercollegiate and Interscholastic athletics promotes character traits of high value to personal development and success later in life. Our mission is to offer all our athletes the opportunity to take their talents to the highest level of performance by teaching them the benefits of leadership, teamwork, discipline, goal setting, character development, believing in one’s self, sportsmanship, an appreciation of living a healthy lifestyle and a desire for lifelong learning. 

 
Wentworth aims for a level of athletic performance that will produce winning seasons and the realistic opportunity to compete for team or individual championships. Wentworth is committed to the physical and emotional well-being of student-athletes and to the social development of the whole person. Athletes are expected to adhere to a level of conduct that brings credit to themselves and the Academy and uphold the values of citizenship and service.

College Athletics: The program shall be composed of nationally or regionally recognized sports that meet the needs, interests, and abilities of male and female students.  Wentworth is a member of the NJCAA.  For 2011-12, the following sports will be offered:
 
Fall Sports:
·         Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
·         Women’s Volleyball
·         Men’s Soccer
 
Winter Sports:
·         Men’s Basketball
·         Wrestling
·         Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track
 
Spring Sports:
·         Men’s and Women’s Tennis
·         Men’s and Women’s Golf
·         Men’s and Women’s Track
 
Additional sports will be added during 2012-13
 
High School Athletic Program:  Wentworth is a member of the MSHSAA, and competes in the Mid-State Conference.  In holding with the Mission Statement for Wentworth Athletics, all high school cadets are required to participate in two varsity sports per year.  For 2011-12 the following sports will be offered:

·         Boys Basketball*
·         Wrestling*

Spring Sports:

·         Girls and Boys Golf
 
*Qualifies as a Team Sport for required Cadet participation

PLAY HARD.

The centerpiece of Wentworth’s athletic facilities is the 65,000 square foot Wikoff Athletic Center. It boasts three full size indoor basketball courts, an 11 lap to the mile Laykold indoor track, racquetball court, weight room, wrestling room, training facilities with Jacuzzi, and an Olympic-size indoor pool.

An outdoor track hosts track and field events during the fall, spring, and summer. The Alumni Football Stadium has seen thousands of Wentworth’s young men learn the benefits of teamwork and athletic achievement over the years. A baseball diamond, six tennis courts, rappelling tower, and paintball course are busy year round.

WMA Dragon Wagon

The Dragon Wagon is the official concessions trailer of the Booster Club. It is present not only on campus but at various area community events to raise funds for athletics. The Dragon Wagon was donated to the Academy by the Alumni Association.
